It is unlikely to be a problem if your hotel is located inside the restricted area. Hallstatt is very small and the part where you need permission to drive even smaller. If you cannot get past a barrier for whatever reason, it shouldn't be more than a few minutes walk to get the issue resolved.

I will be ingHallstatt, staying for 2 nights, in late August, with my wife. I originally intended to secure a rental car to drive there from Salzburg and return, because I think we can better enjoy the country-side as well as having less hassle in catching a connecting train with loads of luggage. But I am a bit ed, knowing that getting into Hallstatt requires an electronic code to get through some gates somewhere, and it will not be nice to get stuck in the middle of no-where if the code does not work. Please advice. David

The alternative route from Hallstatt to Vienna is with two train changes – change at Stainach-Irdning and Leoben Hbf. You will arrive in Vienna at Wien Meidling rather than Wien Westbahnhof. The cost and travel time are about the same as going via Attnang-Puchheim. The connection times are only a few minutes, which risks an hour’s wait should a train be late.

For an adult traveling alone, it will be a close-run between standard tickets and the 4-day Eurail Austria Pass (if you are not a European resident). Hallstatt-Wien & Wien-Salzburg is €47.50 each, Salzburg-Hallstatt €22.50 and Wien to Bratislava should be around €15 (it is €11 to the last station in Austria). The Eurail Austria 4 day second class is €131 or €112 each if two travel together.

We will be going from Vienna to Salzburg by way of the northern train route through Atnang-Puchheim. After a 3-day stay in Salzburg, we will go on to Hallstatt for 2 nights. Is there a reasonable southern route to go back to Vienna by train from Hallstatt? Would a Rail Europe 4-day pass be advisable for this trek? We also plan a day trip to Brataslava by train once we're in Vienna. Advice is appreciated. Danke

The train on this routing is €22.50 each way - the train bus combination should be about the same. There is no discount for return journeys on this route.

If you travel with someone - up to 5 - the Einfach Raus Ticket is also a good option. It is €28 for five for travel on local trains in Austria (after 9 am on weekdays but all day over weekends).

I would like to travel from Salzburg to Hallstatt on Sept 26th and return on 30th Sept. Is there a way for me to get a day excursion trip fare on the 26th and take a return trip on the 30th back to Salzburg? If that is possible, what would be the cost? If not, what is the cost for the 150 bus/train route to Hallstatt? And what is the cost of a train back? Vielen Dank !
