In 2009, for the second consecutive year, the Volkswagen Golf was the top selling car in Europe. The VW Golf was followed on the list of the 10 best-selling passenger vehicles in Europe in 2009 by the Ford Fiesta and the Peugeot 207. New passenger car registrations were down 1.6% in Europe in 2009 for a total of 14,481,545 cars registered in Europe in 2009. Volkswagen was the top brand and top motorcar manufacturing group in Europe in 2009 with a market share of 21.1%.

VW Golf and Polo are Germany’s Favorite Car Models

The VW Golf and Polo head the list of the top ten best-selling cars in Germany in 2009. New passenger vehicle registrations were up 23.2% to a total of 3,807,175.

Unsurprisingly, in 2009, the Volkswagen Golf was again the most popular car model in Germany. Germany’s favorite car, the VW Golf with Golf Plus and Jetta derivatives, sold more cars than the second (VW Polo), third (Opel Corsa), and fourth (Opel Astra) combined. In 2009, small cars were the best sellers while the more expensive Audi, BMW, Mercedes and VW Passat car models slipped down the list. Ford Fiesta Dethroned Focus as Britain’s Favorite Car

In 2009, the Ford Fiesta and Focus topped the list of the ten best-selling car models in Britain. New passenger vehicle registrations in the UK fell below 2 million in 2009.

Britain’s favorite car in 2009 was the Ford Fiesta. The Ford Focus, for ten consecutive years at the top of the list of best-selling motorcar models in the UK, was pushed to second place. Both Ford and Vauxhall had three cars in the top-ten list of new passenger vehicle registrations in Britain in 2009. The Mini entered the top-ten list in 2009 while the Vauxhall Zafira slipped out of the top-ten list of best-selling cars in Britain.

The overall UK car market declined by 6.4% in 2009 to 1,994,999 new passenger vehicle registrations according to the SMMT. It was the first time the British car market fell below two million cars sold since 1995.

In 2008, the Volkswagen Golf regained its position as the best-selling car in Europe. Europe’s favorite car in 2007, the Peugeot 207 was the second most-sold car in Europe in 2008 followed by the Ford Focus and Opel / Vauxhall Corsa. Of the top ten bestselling cars in Europe in 2008, only the VW Golf and the Audi A4 could increase the number of passenger vehicles sold. New car registrations were down in Europe for most of 2008 and most automobile manufacturers recorded huge declines in sales volumes.
