Getting to Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN), Germany is far more complicated than taking the train from Frankfurt International Airport to downtown Frankfurt am Main. Hahn is popular with low-cost airlines such as Ryanair and Wizz Air and therefore not surprisingly inconveniently located to most major cities. The airport is modern but small. The long-term parking lots at Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN) are vast and reasonably priced giving a clear indication how locals prefer to travel to their cheap flights. Several car rental agencies have car hire desks at the airport while buses run to several cities. No railway line and thus no train passes near the airport.

Driving from Frankfurt-Hahn Airport to destinations in the direction of the Rhine River, most travelers will use the B50 state road in the direction of Simmern. From here, the road is a double-lane highway (but this is not an Autobahn so stick to the posted speedlimits!)
At Rheinböllen (Autobahn exit 45) turn north on the A61 to go to Koblenz and Cologne, and south towards Mainz, Wiesbaden, and Frankfurt. The A60 leads to Mainz; turn off onto the A643 to get to Wiesbaden. From here follow the A66 straight into Frankfurt am Main, or turn off on the A3 towards Frankfurt International Airport. In light traffic, traveling time is around an hour to Mainz and Wiesbaden and 90 minutes to Frankfurt city and airport.

A very scenic but much slower alternative route from Frankfurt-Hahn Airport goes via the Rhine. From Rheinböllen, avoid the autobahn and continue on the small and winding road to Bacharach, a very picturesque wine town on the Rhine. (This road is best avoided in the dark and adverse weather conditions.) Although roads closely follows the Rhine on both banks, no bridges cross the Rhine between Koblenz and Wiesbaden-Mainz but several car ferries are available. The B42 on the right bank of the Rhine passes through Rüdesheim and automatically leads into the A66 to Wiesbaden and Frankfurt.
- Cheap flights on low-cost airlines made Frankfurt-Hahn famous – the distance from Frankfurt am Main made it somewhat infamous. Bus services to Hahn allow this low-cost airline haven to compete with Frankfurt International Airport for international travelers willing to forgo the latter’s convenience in exchange for low airfares.
