The Cheap and Fast Jet Express Bus TXL and X9 to Flughafen Tegel

Public transportation is the cheapest and fastest way to Flughafen Berlin-Tegel Airport with JetExpressBus TXL and X9 running from Mitte, Hauptbahnhof, and Zoologischer Garten areas.

Buses are generally the best, fastest, and cheapest way to travel to Flughafen Berlin-Tegel Airport (TXL). The Jet Express Buses are particularly handy when traveling to Berlin-Hauptbahnhof, Mitte, Alexanderplatz, Prenzlauerberg, or Zoologischer Garten areas. Tegel Airport is generally the more convenient of Berlin’s two major airports. Berlin-Schönefeld (SXF) is to the south of the city and the preferred airport of low-cost airlines. However, note that Air Berlin mostly flies to Tegel.

Berlin-Tegel Airport is in public transportation zone B, thus an AB ticket is required to travel to most parts of Berlin. A taxi from Tegel-Airport to Berlin Hauptbahnhof is around €25 – expensive compared to the €2.30 required for an AB-zone ticket from January 2012.

Passengers transiting to Berlin-Schönefeld Airport require an ABC-zone ticket (€3.00 from 2012).

NOTE: Berlin Brandenburg International Willy Brandt Airport (BER / BBI) will replace Berlin Tegel (TXL) and Berlin Schönefeld (SXF) airports as the only airport serving the capital of Germany from June 3, 2012.

JetExpressBuses from Tegel Airport (TXL) to Central Berlin Mitte

The cheapest and often most convenient and fastest way from Tegel Airport to central Berlin is by bus. Buses to and from the airport generally operate from before 5 am to around midnight. Buses run every few minutes making timetable consultation fairly irrelevant during normal business hours. Transportation to the airport is available throughout the night but require a bit of extra planning in addition to limited schedules

Two Jet Express Buses – extra-long buses with special space for luggage – run from Tegel Airport halting only at major stops. These express buses are operated by the regular Berlin public transportation authorities and thus require the standard Berlin public transportation tickets or passes.

  • JetExpressBuses X9 connect Flughafen Tegel with Zoologischer Garten Station, the heart of former West Berlin, in 20 minutes. Passengers transiting to Berlin-Schönefeld Airport (SXF) may prefer to use bus X9 and transfer to a train at the smaller Zoologischer Garten Station rather than the larger Berlin Hauptbahnhof.
  • JetExpressBus TXL runs from Flughafen Tegel to Prenzlauer Berg in 40 minutes. En route, it stops amongst others at the Hauptbahnhof (20 minutes), Unter den Linden (30 minutes), and Alexander Platz (35 minutes).

Regular Buses from Tegel Airport to Central Berlin

Two further regular public transportation bus services are available from Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL):

  • Bus 109 connects Flughafen Tegel with Zoologischer Garten Station in 27 minutes. It basically follows the same route as JetExpressBus X9 but stops more often – amongst others at the following S and U-Bahn train stations: Charlottenburg (17 minutes), Adenauerplatz (19 minutes), Uhlandstraße (23 minutes), and Kurfürstendamm (25 minutes).
  • Bus 128 connects Tegel Airport with Kurt-Schuhmacher-Platz. This route is not particularly useful to foreign travelers but is an easy way to enter the Berlin U-Bahn network.

By Train to Berlin-Tegel Airport (TXL)

Berlin-Tegel Airport (TXL) is not connected to the railway network and can thus not be reached directly by train or metro. Long-distance rail travelers generally change to the JetExpressBus at the Hauptbahnhof or Zoologischer Garten stations in downtown Berlin.

  • Note that Berlin has an S-Bahn station Tegel and adjacent U-Bahn station Alt Tegel but these do not give access to the airport. To get from these stations to the airport, take U-Bahn train U6 back towards central Berlin and change at Kurt-Schuhmacher-Platz to bus 128 to Tegel Airport.

Other ways to enter the U-Bahn and S-Bahn railway networks when traveling from Tegel Airport include: JetExpressBus X9 and bus 109 stop at U-Bahn Station Jakob-Kaiser-Platz (U7 to Spandau) and Jungfernheide (S-Bahn ring). JetExpressBus TXL stops at Beusselstraße (S-Bahn ring).

Berlin’s second airport – Flughafen Berlin-Schönefeld (SXF) – is also easily reached on public transportation although trains are generally used from downtown Berlin. From Berlin-Südkreuz station in the south of the city Expressbus-Linie SXF1 is a fast option too. Transiting between TXL and SXF can be done in just over an hour using buses and trains.

    Hello,
i’ll be at TXL on september 6th around 22:30 hour.
can you please tell me how to get to Moritzplatz (Prinzenstraße 40, 10969)?

Simplest is to take bus X9 to Zoologischer Garten and then change to U Bahn U12 to Prinzenstrasse station (10 min walk from you adress). Alternatively take bus TXL to Alexanderplatz and change to UBahn U8 to Moritzplatz.

    Hello,
I need to get to tegel tomorrow 6/10 at around 5:30. I am staying at an apartment at torstrasse 25 (near rosa luxenburg platz). Sould I take the TXL bus from Alexander Platz? how long is the ride from there to the airport? Is there a better option? What is the frequency of the TXL buses?
    Thank you!

Either walk to Alexanderplatz and take bus TXL from there to the airport, or take bus142 from Rosa Luxemburger Platz to the Hauptbahnhof and take bus TXL from there to Tegel Airport. Early morning, bus TXL runs every 20 minutes or so.

Take bus 109 to Kaiser-Friedrich-Str./Kantstr. (18 min from Tegel) then change to bus M49 for one stop to Amtgerichtsplatz, or four blocks walking to the west. (On bus M49, any bus NOT going to Zoologischer Garten would probably be OK).

I will arrive at Berlin Tegel on January, 13th. I would like to know how to travel to my Hotel at Lietzenburgerstrasse.

Lietzenburgerstraße is far too long to make a sensible suggestion without knowing where you want to end up. The best option will almost certainly be bus 109 and a short walk or change to a second a bus.

    Hi Henk,

    Thanks for your swift reply.
Sorry I forgot to mention the name of the Hotel.
I’m staying in Hotel ABBA Berlin at Lietzenburgerstrasse 89.
Can you tell me which busstop (and additional information)?

    Regards
    Ed

From Tegel Airport, take bus 109 towards Zoologischer Garten – get off at Bleibtreustrasse stop (24 minutes) on the Kurfürstendamm. Walk one block south on Bleibtreustrasse and turn left onto Lietzenburgstrasse. The hotel should be about a block away.

    Hello henk
we will arrive with a group at Tegel airport (15th of Feb 2012) and need to go to the Friedrichstrasse. Would you recommend to take the Jet Express or TXL? And I suppose we need to stop at Unter den linden and than walk? Do you know if we can buy tickets in advance?
    Kind regards
    Marjolein

  14. Henk Bekker says:

The TXL is a Jet Express Bus. It will almost certainly be the best choice but it very much depends on where in Friedrichstrasse you want to end up – it is a fairly long street. Trying to buy tickets in advance will almost certainly be more hassle than it is worth. If you plan on further group travel on buses or trains on the same day, consider a Kleingruppen-Tageskarte – €15 per day for up to five traveling together in zone AB.

    Hi

I`m traveling from TXL to Rankestraße 3, Charlottenburg. What is the best and easiest way to get there?

    Thanks
    Rikke

Simplest is to take bus X9 to Zoologischer Garten station and walk from there. Alternatively, change at Zoologischer Garten to bus M46 (direction U Britz Süd) and get off at Europa-Center (two stops), which is a bit closer to your address.
