The Novotel Bern Expo is a family-friendly hotel on the outskirts of Bern’s old town area. Although the hotel aims mostly at business travelers and visitors to the adjacent Messe exhibition center and Wankdorf stadium, leisure travelers can often find excellent value during quiet periods. The very comfortable rooms can sleep up to four and children breakfast for free with their parents. The hotel is only around a kilometer from the Bärengraben or Zentrum Paul Klee with tram and bus stops right in front of the hotel.
The Family-Friendly Novotel Bern Expo Hotel
The Novotel Bern Expo is a very modern, four-star hotel furnished in the current Novotel fashion with bright rooms that can accommodate families of up to four. Rooms have a double bed and foldout sofa double bed.
As is common in many Novotel hotels, the bathroom and toilet are separate but the latter without an own washing basin. The bathroom is modern and well lit with large mirrors. The bathroom has a full bath as well as a separate walk-in shower. Sufficient towels and toiletries are supplied for a family of four.
Rooms have a kettle with tea and coffee-making supplies and a small bar fridge. In-room safes are large enough to accommodate most notebooks.
Video games and toys are available for children to use at reception. Currently, an hour of free wifi is available for all throughout the hotel and can be extended at the reception. Two internet-linked computers with printers are available for guest use.
The breakfast buffet is a decent spread of hot and cold dishes. At CHF26 it is not exactly cheap but a family of four will struggle to find similar value for CHF52 elsewhere in Bern, especially on Sunday mornings when Bern is slow to wake up.
Location of the Novotel Bern Expo Hotel
The Novotel Bern Expo hotel has a very convenient location to the northeast of Bern’s old town. The hotel is directly across the Bern Expo Messe exhibition grounds and near the ice hokey and Stade de Suisse football stadiums in Bern Wankdorf.
From the Novotel Bern Expo, it is less than a kilometer to the Rosengarten, and just over a kilometer to the Bärengraben (Bear Park) at the edge of Bern’s UNESCO World Cultural Heritage-listed old town. The Zentrum Paul Klee is also around a kilometer to the southeast of the hotel.
Guisanplatz tram stop is directly in front of the Novotel Bern Expo hotel. Tram 9 takes only 7 minutes from here to Bern Hauptbahnhof (main train station).
By car, use exit 37 (Bern Wankdorf WEA) from the Autobahn A6. When driving from the old town, turn left onto Aagauerstaße at the Bärengraben and continue along Papiermühlstraße. The hotel has its own underground parking garage.
The Novotel Bern Expo shares the modern building with the Ibis and Etap hotels, which are often cheaper but less luxurious and unable to accommodate four per room.
