In recent years, many Swiss cities have introduced Christmas markets to bring some holiday cheer to the December advent period. Very few Christmas markets in Switzerland can claim the long tradition of German Christmas markets but as a bonus some Swiss Christmas markets will stay open past Xmas Eve. Well-known Christmas markets (Weihnachtsmärkte) in German-speaking Switzerland are in Basel, Bern, St Gallen, and Zurich while Montreux (pictured above) on Lake Geneva has the most famous Marché de Noël in French-speaking Switzerland. Mt Pilatus and Rochers-de-Naye have Christmas markets on Alpine peaks.

My list of the top ten best Christmas markets in Germany, not necessarily in a fixed order, include:

Travel to Christmas Markets in Cologne, Germany

The Kölner Weihnachtsmarkt, Cathedral, Churches, and Top Museums

Cheap flights and fast trains help to make the Kölner Weihnachtsmarkt (Cologne Christmas Market), Dom (Cathedral), and museums popular travel destinations in Germany.

Cologne’s Christmas market has long been popular with travelers on ferry and bus trips from London, the UK, and even Ireland. Cheap flights to Cologne-Bonn Airport / Köln/Bonn Flughafen (CGN) on low-cost airlines continue to bring tourists from Great Britain and the rest of Europe to the Rhinelands. Fast trains bring Cologne within easy reach of travelers from most of Germany as well as from neighboring countries including Belgium, the Netherlands, France and even England.

Cologne has attractive Christmas markets but visitors will also appreciate the other attractions of this mostly modern city. Cologne has some of the best shopping opportunities in Germany, an active nightlife scene, great Romanesque and Gothic churches, and top impressive museums.

Christmas Markets (Weihnachtsmärkte) in Cologne (Köln), Germany

Cologne does not limit its Christmas market to only one location – markets are spread throughout the city. The most important Christmas markets are in the old town in front of the Gothic Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom), on the Altmarkt, Neumarkt, and Rudolphplatz. The market in front of Cologne’s magnificent Gothic Cathedral naturally has the best backdrop but the Altmarkt also has a romantic feel due to its old town location.

The Cologne Medieval Christmas Market (Kölner Mittelalterliche Weihnachtsmarkt) is held in front of the Chocolate Museum (on a peninsula in the Rhine to the south of the old town). Food, music, and entertainment here recall Cologne’s glorious medieval past. This Cologne Medieval Christmas Market (Kölner Mittelalterliche Weihnachtsmarkt) is the only Christmas market in Cologne that charges an admission fee (€2.50).

  • Cologne’s favorite drink is the very refreshing local beer – Kölsch. It is served in small 200-ml (7-oz) glasses and should be drunk very cold. However, at Christmas markets warm Glühwein (mulled wine) is more common.

Top Sights to See in Cologne (Köln), Germany

For well over a millennium, up to the late 19th century, Cologne was the largest city in the German-speaking world. However, during the Second World War 90% of the old town was destroyed and the population dwindled from 800,000 before the war to 45,000 immediately afterwards as people fled the frequent air raids. Despite this destruction, Cologne is still a very interesting city to visit.

The top sight in Cologne, and with over 6 million annual visitors the most popular monitored sight in all of Germany, is the Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom). The Dom is the largest Gothic church in the world with the third largest church interior in Europe. Its enormous western façade is unrivaled (and hard to capture in a single photo without a wide-angle lens). Construction started in 1248 but the church was only completed in 1880.

Despite numerous air raids during the Second World War, the Cologne Cathedral miraculously escaped the war almost intact. The twin towers are 157 m (518 ft) high, the nave 144 m (475 ft) long, and 43.5 m (143 ft) high. The art and huge stained-glass windows are impressive.

  • It is 509 steps to the viewing platform two-thirds up the south tower.

Cologne’s old town has 12 Romanesque churches. The largest is Groß St Martin but it is worth making the effort to visit St Gereon. St Gereon has Roman origins and an impressive and rare Romanesque decagon cupola.

Top Museums in Cologne (Köln), Germany

With around 150 museums, galleries, and art spaces the choice of cultural sights in Cologne is vast. Some of museums with world class: collections include:

  • Museum Ludwig, next to the Dom, has a very impressive pop art collection.
  • The adjacent Roman-Germanic Museum has articles from the Roman and Frankish periods. (Cologne was an important Roman city for centuries.)
  • The Wallraf-Richartz-Museum is the oldest museum collection in Cologne and has a very important collection of classical paintings (Middle Ages to Impressionist).
  • Imhoff-Stollwerck Museum – also known as the Chocolate Museum – is hugely popular but free sampling opportunities are limited.

Flights and Trains to Cologne (Köln), Germany

Cologne/Bonn Airport (CGN) claims to be the busiest low-cost airline hub on continental Europe so flights are cheap and plentiful. Cologne is also an important rail hub with fast trains to amongst others Frankfurt International Airport (an hour), Düsseldorf, Amsterdam, Brussels, and Paris. London can be reached by train (Eurostar to Brussels and then Thalys TGV or ICE to Köln) in five hours.

German Christmas markets (Weihnachtsmärkte) are outdoor markets held in the month leading up to Christmas. The exact composition of Christmas markets vary from market to market. However, all Christmas markets have stalls selling food and Christmas related wares. Food at Christmas markets include Glühwein (warm, spiced wine), Kinderpunch (spiced fruit juice), Lebkuchen ginger bread cakes, sausages, potato cakes, and baked items. On sale are also Christmas tree decorations, candles, wooden toys, and sweets.  Larger markets usually have simple rides aimed at small children. Many markets also have life music.

  • German Christmas markets generally do not sell cheap plastic imports or clothing.

The names of German Christmas markets vary from region to region. Weihnachtsmarkt (plural Weihnachtsmärkte) is Christmas market in High German but in Dresden it is the Striezelmarkt, in Rothenburg the Reiterlesmarkt, while in most of Bavaria (and Austria) Christkindlmarkt (spelled in various forms) is more common.

Best German Weihnachtsmärkte in Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Dresden, Rothenburg

Germany is famous for its romantic Christmas markets (Weihnachtsmärkte) held all over the country in the advent period preceding Christmas. Christmas markets differ from region to region but for the average foreign visitor, these differences are of minor importance. When picking which German Christmas market to visit, more relevant considerations are the costs and time required to get to the market town, hotel accommodation, and what other entertainment are available. Visitors are unlikely to spend a full day, never mind a whole weekend, at the market itself. It is more common to spend most of the day doing shopping or sightseeing and visit the Christmas market in the late afternoon / early evening.  Berlin and Munich may not have the best Christmas markets in Germany but remain by far the most interesting cities in Germany to visit. »»»Continue reading…

Cheap Flights and Low Airfares from London, UK, & Ireland to Germany

Low-cost airlines have cheap airfares and discount tickets on flights from airports in London, the UK, and Ireland to visit advent Christmas markets (Weihnachtsmärkte) in Germany.

Cheap flights are a major consideration for travelers from Britain and Ireland when flying to Germany to visit a Christmas market (Weihnachtsmarkt). Nürnberg (Nuremberg) is probably the most famous German Christmas market but most German cities have large Weihnachtsmärkte.

If cheap flights are not available on low-cost airlines, also compare deals with regular full-service airlines such as Lufthansa and British Airways bearing in mind that luggage and other surcharges are already included in the advertised prices. German Christmas markets vary in size and flavor but to most foreign visitors the differences will not be that significant, making it quite sensible to pick the market accordig to the lowest price flights available to whatever German airport.
