Traveling along and on the Rhine River has long been popular. Europe’s premier waterway has been very important for commerce in the pre-industrial era and although the Rhine is now less vital for trade, the river is still very much used commercially. The Rhine is also very important for tourism. Boat cruises – from short day-trip excursions to multiple-day cruises – are very popular. The banks of the Rhine are also popular with hikes and cyclers while simply driving through parts of the Rhine Valley is most enjoyable too.

The Rhine River is 1,320 kilometer (820 miles) from its source in Alps in Switzerland to the North Sea in the Netherlands. The Rhine River is Der Rhein in German, Rhin in French, and Die Rijn in Dutch.

Bus tickets can cost more than the low airfare before taxes and surcharges and the bus rides are often longer than the cheap flights to and from HHN. Fortunately, many bus services are available for travel to and from Frankfurt-Hahn Airport.

Frankfurt International Airport (FRA), the busiest airport in continental Europe, is slick and modern with good facilities. However, travelers with stopovers can use Germany’s reliable public transportation system for more interesting excursions than hanging around in the airport’s duty-free shops and departure lounges. Frankfurt am Main is the most logical destination but many travelers prefer the pleasures of more relaxed Mainz and Wiesbaden. Even Cologne (Köln), with its huge Gothic cathedral, Romanesque churches and excellent museums, are within easy – if a bit expensive – day-trip range. »»»Continue reading…
