Poulaines were popular with the European nobility during the 15th century – in many areas non-nobility were forbidden from wearing these pointy shoes. The patten was a wooden protective overshoe to protect the leather shoe when walking in mud (and other unmentionables) on unpaved medieval roads. The fashionable Bubenbergs wore them.
The poulaine and patten on display in Schloss Spiez are replicas – the originals are in the Bally Shoe Museum in Schönewerd.
