Minor Capital Statues in the Duomo Museum Milan

MINOR CAPITAL STATUES
End of the 14th – mid-15th century
These small sculptures in the Duomo Museum were once placed in the niches of the capitals of the Milan Duomo’s pillars.

“As the Cathedral’s construction advanced, a rich production of statuary flourished, a multitude of saints, martyrs, prophets, and biblical characters sculpted in Candoglia marble by local and transalpine workers. Amongst the subject most frequently represented is that of St. Lucy, protectress of sight and thus of stonemasons, exposed to the danger of hurting their eyes with marble slivers during their work. The Saint is recognisable due to her being depicted with her eyes on a plate, an iconographic attribute of martyrdom.”

Displayed in the Museo del Duomo di Milano (Milan Cathedral Museum), Italy.
