Camposanto Cemetery in Pisa

Camposanto Cemetery in Pisa

Some dirt was brought back to Pisa from Jerusalem after a crusade and the ground of the local cemetery was thus considered holy and the name Camposanto stuck. During the medieval times, it was thought that the ground had the power to strip a body to the bone overnight.

The main attraction of the Camposanto to the modern visitor is the magnificent frescoes inside the Gothic arcades.
