High in the center of the nave in near the apse is a large painted crucifix by Giotto. It is an early work from around 1280 and thus the oldest major artwork in the church. Christ on the cross is flanked by portraits of the Virgin and John the Evangelist on each end of the crossbar. This tempura and gold painting on wood measures a considerable 578 x 406 cm.
