Altarpiece from the chapel of the Nuremberg Zwölfbrüderhaus

Altarpiece from the chapel of the Nuremberg Zwölfbrüderhaus by the Nürnberger Meister to a design of Albrecht Dürers, 1511.

The frame’s architectural character symbolizes the Temple of the Old Covenant. Through its portal was seen the depiction of Paradise. The carving of the Last Judgment shows the Blessed and the Damned as well as the enthroned Christ, flanked by Mary and John the Baptist as intercessionaries. This is the first Italianate altar-piece in Germany. Matthäus Landauer commissioned the altarpiece for the Zwölfbrüderhaus, a charity home for 12 elderly craftsmen. The painting itself was taken to Prague in 1585, later to Vienna.

On display in the Germanische Nationalmuseum (culture, history, and art museum) in Nuremberg (Nürnberg), Germany.
