Bernardo Daddi, a pupil of Giotto, painted the Madonna and Child with Eight Angels around 1347, as a replacement for the original Virgin Mary image that was destroyed earlier by fire. The Madonna, wearing a lapis lazuli blue mantle holds the baby Jesus in her arms. He caresses her face while holding a goldfinch in the other hand.
