The best-known paintings on the ground floor of the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin are large works by Adolph Menzel. Several cover important moments in Prussian history, including a very famous work of Frederick the Great playing the flute in concert at Sanssouci (“Flötenkonzert Friedrichs des Großen in Sanssouci”). His realistic “Eisenwalzwerk (Moderne Cyklopen)” (Iron Rolling Mill / Modern Cyclops) is artistically probably higher rated today.
