Drunken Old Woman is a Roman marble copy of the Greek original from around 200 BC. It shows a drunken old woman clutching an enormous bottle of wine to demonstrate the power of Dionysus over anyone. Even an old, well-dressed woman may succumb to his power. For much of the 19th century, the sculpture was considered too ugly for public display and languished in the store room.
