Of the three paintings by Raphael in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, the most famous is the Canigiani Holy Family (Raffael: Die hl. Familie aus dem Hause Canigiani), c. 1505. In this painting, Raphael used vivid colors to paint Joseph and Mary with the infant Christ together with his cousin John (the Baptist) and his mother Elisabeth. In the background is a typical European city. The small angels at the top of the work were overpainted from the late 18th century until 1983.
