The New Sacristy, part of the Medici Chapels in the San Lorenzo church complex in Florence, was Michelangelo’s first major architectural project. However, his sculptures for the tombs of minor Medicis are more impressive. On the left, the tomb of Giuliano, Duke of Nemours, and on the right, Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child designed for the never-completed tomb for Lorenzo the Magnificent.
