A model of the torso of Alexis St Martin. In 1822, he was shot in the stomach. He survived but was left with a fistula in the stomach. Dr William Beaumont paid him to insert food tied to silk strings into his stomach and pull it out to discover how digestion worked. One of his discoveries was that the state of the stomach could be changed by emotions such as anger.
