The outsides of the wings are plain. Although it was possible to close the altar, this was rarely done. It was supposed to be always open and not opened and closed according to the church calendar, as is sometimes done with other triptych altars. Similarly, the back of the main altar is also bare but reveal the glass oriels and the cross of the reliquary.
