Schloss Friedenstein in Gotha was built around an open rectangular courtyard with the main four-story north wing measuring 100 m long while the three-story east and west wings are 140 m each. The southern side of the courtyard is closed off with a relatively low protection wall — it replaced the original single floor riding hall already in the early 18th century.
