Martyr Deaths of St Peter and St Paul, Müstair

September 6, 2014 by Henk Bekker

Romanesque fresco showing the martyr deaths of St Peter and St Paul, Münster

The lives and martyrdom of St Peter and St Paul are illustrated in the north apse of the abbey church of St John in Müstair, Switzerland. Most of the paintings are Carolingian originals from the first half of the 9th century.

The brighter paintings lower down in the apse are Romanesque from around 1200 and show the martyr deaths of the saints: Peter being crucified upside down and Paul being decapitated.
