Hodler: View Into Infinity

Hodler: View Into Infinity in the Kunstmuseum Basel Fine Arts Museum

Swiss artist Ferdinand Hodler (1853-1918) is well represented with portraits and Swiss landscapes, but his huge View Into Infinity (Blick ins Unendliche), 1913/14-16, is unmissable at the entrance to the galleries on the second floor of the museum. This monumental work, measuring 446 by 895 cm (176 × 353 inches), was commissioned by the Kunsthaus in Zürich but was considered too big for the intended venue and bought by the Basel museum instead. Hodler painted a smaller version for the original placement, as well as three further smaller versions now in Zurich, Solothurn, and Winterthur.
