By tradition, rather than fact, the name Antwerpen comes from Hand and Werpen (to throw). A giant, living in the Schelde River cut of the hands of sailors until a Roman soldier โ Silvius Brabo โ defeated the giant, cut of his hand and threw it in the river. In the fountain of Brabo by Jef Lambeaux (1887) on Grote Markt, Brabo throws the hand away from the river otherwise it would have been straight into the town hall.
