The popular mid-12th-century bronze grave of Archbishop Friedrich of Wettin in Magdeburg Cathedral has a small figure pulling a thorn from his foot at the bottom of the bishop’s staff. Goethe described it as a barbaric copy of the Boy with a Thorn in the Capitolini Museum in Rome.
