Deceiving the observer with a trick of the eye: for artists and art dealers it became a kind of sport. Trompe l’oeil paintings were objects to show off and to amuse guests. Just as a host might show people around the garden, fascinate them with curiosities or entertain with musicians. A perspective box was the ultimate visual game.
