Stuttgart Airport (STR) is just over 10 km (6 miles) south of Stuttgart. Ground transportation is cheap and fast to Stuttgart and other towns in the state Baden-Württemberg in Southern Germany. S-Bahn trains S2 and S3 are usually the way of getting to Stuttgart airport from downtown. Buses run to many towns and driving is easy too. Suntransfers gives online quotations for private airport transfers, which may be useful when traveling in a small group and heading to a destination not readily served by public transportation.

By Train from Stuttgart Downtown to Stuttgart Airport

The S-Bahn train is the fastest way from downtown to Stuttgart Airport (STR). S-Bahn S2 and S-Bahn S3 connect Stuttgart Main Station (Hauptbahnhof) and the airport (Flughafen) in around 25 minutes. These S-Bahn trains operate from around 5 am to just after midnight with trains running from once every 10 minutes to at least every 30 minutes.

Buses to Stuttgart Airport (STR)

Many bus services are available from nearby towns to Stuttgart Airport. Generally the most useful for foreign visitors is Bus 828 (Airport Sprinter) that runs to the lovely university town Tübingen on the Neckar River up to twice per hour in just less than an hour.

By Car to Stuttgart Airport (STR)

Stuttgart Airport can very easily be accessed by car. Stuttgart Airport is to the south of town directly next to Autobahn A8 (use exit 53, Stuttgart Flughafen).

Driving time is around 20 minutes from Stuttgart downtown to Stuttgart Airport (STR). Stuttgart Airport is around 60 km (40 miles) from Karlsruhe, 100 km (60 miles) from Ulm, and just over 200 km (125 miles) from Munich.

Excursions on a Stuttgart Airport Stopover

It is easy to travel from Stuttgart Airport to downtown for sightseeing when on layovers at the airport.

  • Popular sights within walking distance from Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof include the large Schlossplatz (lawn square with impressive buildings), Altes Schloss (Old Castle), and the Staatsgalerie with impressive art.
  • For the Mercedes Benz Museum, change to S-Bahn S1 train at the Hauptbahnhof. The museum is a few minutes’ walk – well signposted – from Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion station.
  • For the Porsche Museum, change to S-Bahn S6 train at the Hauptbahnhof and get off at Neuwirtshaus (Porsche Platz).

By Train From Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof to Frankfurt International Airport (FRA)

Traveling by train from Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof to Frankfurt International Airport takes only an hour and 15 minutes by at least hourly direct ICE trains. For some Lufthansa flights from Frankfurt Airport, it is possible to check-in at Stuttgart station but luggage has to be checked at the Lufthansa Quick Check-in Counter at Frankfurt Airport’s Fernbahnhof (Station) at least an hour prior to flight departure. This AIRail service must be reserved through Lufthansa or a travel agent.

Stuttgart Airport (STR) is the sixth-largest airport in Germany but for many destinations, it is necessary to fly from Frankfurt International Airport. Cheap flights to Stuttgart are available from many European and especially Mediterranean holiday destinations.
