In 2025, Paris introduced new, easier transport tickets, passes, and prices for metro, train, RER, tram, and bus travel on the city's extensive public transportation network and transit system.

Since January 2025, Paris has been using a new simplified ticket system for its public transportation network. For visitors, tariff zones are no longer relevant. Single tickets cover the metro, trains, and RER, or the buses and trams. Day, weekly, and month passes could be good value for tourists. Transport tickets to the Charles de Gaulle or Paris Orly airport have a surcharge price. Buy tickets cheapest by phone or use a cheap reloadable Navigo Easy card. Unfortunately, a simple contactless bankcard tap-in and tap-out system is not used in Paris.

Basic Paris Public Transportation Ticket Prices in 2025:

Single tickets: €2.50 for Metro-Train-RER, €2 for Bus-Tram, €13 for Paris Region <> Airports, and €12 for a day pass. See Guide to Paris Public Transport Tickets for prices and details.

New Paris Public Transport Tickets and Prices in 2025

The new Paris public transportation system includes the larger Paris region — ÃŽle de France — as a single tariff zone. Basic tickets are now valid for the whole network, except for the airport stations.

Buy Paris transport tickets by phone or load tickets onto a reusable Navigo travel card — base prices are the same.

The basic and cheapest Paris public transportation tickets are:

  • €2.50 — Ticket Métro-Train-RER: valid on these trains with unlimited transfers for up to 2 hours, or until exiting a station.
  • €2.00 — Ticket Bus-Tram: valid on trams and buses with unlimited transfers for 90 minutes (but no returns).
  • €13.00 — Ticket Paris Région <> Aéroports: valid as for the Metro-Train-RER ticket but allowing journeys to or from Charles de Gaulle Airport on RER B and Orly Airport on Metro 14 or Orlyval.

Note:

  • Transferring between the train and bus-tram networks requires two separate tickets.
  • Métro-Train-RER tickets expire when exiting the larger station. For example, you will often exit a RER station but still be in the ticketing area to use the connecting metro. Follow the Correspondance signs to avoid exiting the station.
  • Bus-Tram tickets are valid up to 90 minutes, but return journeys and backtracking are not allowed. Also, journeys should not be interrupted for longer than it takes to change to the next line.
  • Scan tickets when entering the stations of vehicles. Don’t scan upon exit, except at some stations where tickets are needed to open the gates.
  • Children 4 to 10 pay half fare on most tickets, while under four-year-olds travel for free.

Previous Paris Transport Tickets and Prices

The new transportation system was introduced on 1 January 2025 in Paris. Many guidebooks and websites still use outdated information. The Ticket t+, the popular carnet, and the Paris Region Pass are no longer sold.

Similarly, maps still show tariff zones, but these are only relevant to residents using transportation subscriptions. Longer journeys, e.g. Paris to Versailles, are now cheaper than in 2024, but shorter journeys and transfers are more expensive.

Paris Public Transportation and Metro Passes and Travel Cards 2025

Paris public transportation passes are good value if public transit and buses are used extensively. These passes are valid for transfers to between any of the metros, urban and RER trains, buses, trams, and the funicular. (Access to airport train stations is usually excluded.)

It is easiest to buy these transportation passes by mobile phone, but loading passes onto a reusable Navigo Easy card is also a good idea.

For visitors to Paris, the following public transportation passes are of interest to tourists in 2025:

Forfait Navigo Jour / Navigo Day Ticket

The standard day pass is valid until midnight (or until the end of service on some night lines) of the selected day. It costs €12, so it requires 5 train or 6 bus journeys to work out cheaper than single tickets. It allows for unlimited transfers, also between trains and buses.

Forfait Paris Visite

This is a typical transportation pass and includes stops at the airport stations. It really only makes financial sense if two airport journeys (2 x €13) are included in the selected period of validity.

It is available for the following periods (expiring at midnight of the final day):

  • €29.90 — 1 day
  • €44.45 — 2 days
  • €62.30 — 3 days
  • €76.25 — 5 days

For me, the main reason to buy the Paris Visite is that it covers both journeys to the airport and all transportation in Paris for the stay in one go. No need to buy separate tickets. Furthermore, I would buy it on a Navigo Easy card to avoid having to use my phone at the station entrance. (Dropping the phone rather than theft is my main concern.)

Week and Month Passes

Although aimed at locals, non-residents may also buy the following two passes, which are great value if conditions are met:

  • €31.60 — Forfait Navigo Semaine / Navigo Weekly Ticket
  • €88.80 — Forfait Navigo Mois / Navigo Monthly Ticket

The week pass is valid from Monday to Sunday and is only for sale from the preceding Friday. The month pass is valid for the calendar month and is only for sale from the 20th of the preceding month.

Both passes require a Navigo account — this is easiest arranged on a phone. In contrast to other tickets (and the Navigo Easy card), these passes are not anonymous and are linked to the bearer’s account by name and photo. Setting it up the first time is a bit time-consuming — do it at home before traveling. Once set up, it is easy to buy tickets when needed.

How and Where to Buy Paris Metro and Transport Tickets

The cheapest and easiest way to buy tickets for the Paris métro and the whole transportation system is by phone. However, there are good reasons to get a reloadable Navigo Easy card too.

Buy Paris Metro Tickets by Phone

There are three ways to buy Paris transportation tickets by phone:

  • Simplest by direct wallet or similar, e.g., on an iPhone: open Wallet > + > Travel Card > France > Navigo Paris > select from ticket and pass options.
  • Through an official Paris transportation app: IDF Mobilités or RATP.
  • Recharge an existing Navigo Easy card by phone.

Tip: Buy tickets before going into metro stations and set up accounts before leaving home.

Buy Navigo Easy Card at Metro and RER Train Stations

A Navigo Easy card is a reloadable transportation ticket. First, buy a Navigo Easy card for €2 from vending machines at stations. Then load any travel tickets onto this travel card at station vending machines or by smartphone through the official transportation apps.

It is possible to load up to a maximum of 20 Metro-Train-RER or 20 Bus-Tram tickets simultaneously onto a Navigo Easy Card to use successively. Two travelers cannot share one Navigo Easy card during the same journey. Also, it is not possible to have two different types of tickets simultaneously on the same Navigo Easy card. If planning many journeys or transfers, it may be sensible to get two separate Navigo Easy cards for trains and buses.

Although it is possible to share some tickets on some phones, on the whole, it is far easier to just get a Navigo Easy card for each family member or friend when traveling together.

Navigo Easy cards are a great option for travelers not keen on taking out expensive phones when entering stations or buses. Not breaking when dropped at the ticket gate is another advantage.

In contrast to the anonymous Navigo Easy, a standard Navigo pass is personal and linked by name and photo to the bearer. For tourists, it is only worth getting a Navigo account for buying a week or a month pass. You may also see Navigo Liberté+, which has a French bank account and residency requirements.
