Tränenpalast (Palace of Tears) in Berlin

Museum in the Tränenpalast (Palace of Tears) in Berlin

The Tränenpalast (Palace of Tears) was the departure hall at Friedrichstraße station for travelers departing from East Germany to West Berlin during much of the Cold War. It now houses an interesting free museum.

The Tränenpalast is a surprisingly modern and airy design. However, typically for the East German regime, the interior floor was much lower than the windows making it impossible to see anything happening at street level from inside the building.
