New Star Restaurants in Michelin Switzerland 2018 Red Guide

Switzerland remains in 2018 with 118 star restaurants the country with the highest Michelin star gourmet restaurant density.

Michelin awarded 16 restaurants with new stars for the Switzerland 2018 hotels and restaurants red guide to bring the total to a new high of 118 restaurants. Switzerland now has 3 three-star restaurants, 19 two-star restaurants and 96 one-star restaurants. The number of Michelin-star restaurants in Switzerland nearly doubled in the past decade to leave Switzerland in Michelin’s estimation with the highest number of gourmet restaurants per capita in the world.

This brings the number of Swiss Michelin-star restaurants to a new high of 118 to maintain Switzerland’s position as the country with the highest density of Michelin star restaurants per capita.

The number of Swiss Michelin three-star restaurants remained unchanged for 2018 at three: “B. Violier – Restaurant de l’Hôtel de Ville“ in Crissier (VD), “Schauenstein“ in Fürstenau (GR) and “Cheval Blanc by Peter Knogl“ in Basel.

Two new two-star awards, and one deletion, leave Switzerland with 19 Michelin two-star restaurants. The two new Swiss two-star restaurants are “Einstein Gourmet“ in St. Gallen and “Taverne zum Schäfli“ in Wigoltingen (TG).

Michelin awarded 14 Swiss restaurants with their first stars in the 2018 Switzerland Red Guide to bring the total up to a new high of 96 (including two in Liechtenstein). This is an increase of only two as 12 restaurants were deleted from the one-star list.

The number of Swiss Michelin star-restaurants increased by 40% from 84 in the 2008 Switzerland Red Guide to 118 in the 2018 Guide.

New Bib Gourmand Restaurants in Michelin Switzerland 2018

The number of Bib Gourmand restaurants in the Michelin Switzerland 2018 Red Guide also increased to a new record 153 including 30 new inclusions. This is just more than double the 76 Swiss Bib Gourmand restaurants that appeared in the 2008 guide.

Bib Gourmand restaurant must prepare a good meal at a reasonable price. In the Switzerland 2018 Red Guide, Michelin allows up to CHF70 for a three-course meal to confirm that dining in Switzerland is pricy – in Germany, chefs need to provide such meal for almost half the price.

For 2018, Michelin added a “plate” symbol for restaurants with above average good food if not yet at Bib gourmand or star quality.

Le Guide Michelin Suisse / Schweiz / Svizzera / Switzerland 2018 is also a new record 500 pages thick and reviews 514 hotels and 931 restaurants.

Although Zürich and Geneva remained the cities with the highest density of star and Bib Gourmand restaurants, quality gourmet food may be found all over Switzerland. Canton Graubünden (Grissons) with its Alpine resorts remained the canton with the highest number of star restaurants including five in St Moritz alone.
