Münster Osnabrück International Airport (FMO) is located near Greven in between the two historic towns in the airport name in North Rhine Westphalia in Germany. Airport shuttle bus services run between the airport (Flughafen) and Münster or Osnabrück. Both cities have good German Railways (Deutsche Bahn DB) train connections to other parts of Germany and the Netherlands.

Getting to Münster Osnabrück International Airport (FMO) by Car

Münster Osnabrück International Airport (FMO) – the English name currently is the official name rather than the previous German Flughafen Münster/Osnabrück – is located in the German state North Rhine Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen / NRW). The airport is in the community Greven, around 25 km north of Münster and 35 km south of Osnabrück.

When driving by car, use the Autobahn A1, exit 75 (Flughafen Münster/Osnabrück). This autobahn exit has been completed in 2010 and may not be on all maps. Some travelers from the Netherland and northern Germany may prefer to use the Autobahn A30, exit Ibbenbüren.

By Bus or Train to Münster Osnabrück International Airport (FMO) in Germany

Buses provide the cheapest and best public transportation options to Münster Osnabrück International Airport (FMO. Trains do not stop at the airport but good German Railways (Deutsche Bahn DB) connections are available from Münster, Osnabrück, and Ibbenbüren.

Bus X150 Express Bus from Osnabrück to Münster Osnabrück International Airport

The cheapest transportation between Münster Osnabrück International Airport and Osnabrück Hauptbahnhof (Main Train Station) is on bus X150, also sometimes referred to as the FMO-eXpress. This bus runs up to 21 times per day (slightly less on weekends) and offer services through the night as well. The FMO-X150 Express buses operate according to the timetable and do not wait for late flight arrivals.

The bus traveling time between Osnabrück Hbf and FMO is generally 45 minutes. On weekdays, at least hourly buses are available between 6 am and 9 pm with buses around every 90 minutes throughout the night. On weekends, buses are less frequent but still available through the night as well.

Bus X150 departs from bus stop 3 (Bussteig 3) at Osnabrück Hauptbahnhof and five minutes later from bus stop A1 at Osnabrück Neumarkt. En route to Münster Osnabrück Airport, the X150 also stops at Universität, Arndtplatz, Uhland Straße, Hiärm-Gruppe-Straße, Kurt-Schumacher-Damm and in Ladbergen.

Express Bus X150 drops passengers off at Terminal 2 but depart from the airport from Door 2 (Tür 2) Stop B from Terminal 1 (arrivals).

Buses to Münster and Ibbenbüren from Münster Osnabrück Airport (FMO)

Buses provide the cheapest public transportation from Münster Osnabrück Airport to downtown Münster. Three bus services are available from Münster to the airport with two services continuing to further cities in the region.

The three bus services from Münster Hauptbahnhof (Main Train Station) to the FMO Airport are:

  • D50 Directbus (Direct Bus) – Münster Hauptbahnhof to the airport in just over 20 minutes. Despite the name, the bus can actually stops at around 12 points but only to drop off passengers from the airport / picking up for the airport. the D50 bus runs mostly between 9 pm and 4 am.
  • S50 Schnellbus (Fast Bus) – Münster to the airport in just over 30 minutes. S50 continues past the airport to reach Ibbenbüren station in half an hour.
  • R51 RegioBus (Regional Bus) – Münster to the airport in just less than 50 minutes via Sprakel and Greven (Mitte). R51 continues past the airport to Lengerich.

For travelers to and from Münster, it does not matter which bus is used – the schedule does not allow for a time saving by taking a later direct bus rather than the regional bus.

On weekdays, over 30 buses per day operate between Münster Hauptbahnhof and Münster Osnabrück Airport and over weekends at least 15 per day. A service is available through the night, although between around 8:30 pm and 4:30 am only the D50 buses operate. On weekdays, there are at least one R51 and one S50 bus per hour during the day. The buses operate according to the timetable and do not wait for delayed flights.

A bewildering number of ticket options are available on these buses. The basic one-way adult fare from Münster or Ibbenbüren to Münster Osnabrück Airport is €7.30 (€3.70 for children 6 to 14). A group ticket (Gruppenticket) valid for a day for up to 5 passengers of any age is €25.70 (€22 if uses only after 9 am – then called a 9 Uhr Gruppenticket). A 9 Uhr Tagesticket (valid all day after 9 am) is available for €12 for an adult with up to three children under 15. Further discount tickets sold by Deutsche Bahn may also be valid.

Münster Osnabrück International Airport (FMO) is mostly used for cheap flights to Mediterranean holiday destinations. However, German low-cost airline Air Berlin and Lufthansa offer flights to more regular business cities too. Other airports in the region including Düsseldorf (DUS) and Weeze (NRN) offer more flights.
