Total travel time is around 40 minutes –- use a Munich Zone M-1 day ticket. This day ticket is cheaper than two single tickets and covers both the train and bus, including all transfers for the day.

Trains from Munich to Dachau Train Station
To travel from Munich to the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial, first take a train to Dachau station:
From München Hauptbahnhof – or any other S-Bahn station in downtown Munich:
- Take S-Bahn train S2 to Dachau (or direction Peterhausen or Altomünster).
- Travel time from Munich Main Station to Dachau Bahnhof is just over 20 minutes.
- Normally, three S2 trains per hour run between Munich and Dachau.
On the return, from Dachau, use S-Bahn S2 to Erding (or to München).
Regional trains (Regionalbahn RB) are a few minutes faster but run infrequently.
Bus 726 from Dachau Station to KZ-Gedenkstätte
From Dachau station to KZ-Gedenkstätte:
- Use bus 726 (direction Gewerbegebiet Ost / KZ-Gedenkstätte / Saubachsiedlung) to the bus stop KZ-Gedenkstätte.
- Travel time is around 7 minutes.
(On the return, use bus 726 marked Dachau Bahnhof.)
Bus 726 departs directly in front of Dachau train station, with the stop clearly marked as Dachau Concentration Camp or KZ-Gedenkstätte. Similarly, bus stop KZ-Gedenkstätte is right in front of the memorial’s visitor information center.
Alternatively, it is around a 30-minute walk along the “Path of Remembrance” from the station to the memorial site. This well-marked path with information panels follows the route that prisoners had to walk from Dachau station to the camp.

By Train and Bus from Munich Airport to Dachau

Getting to the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial (KZ-Gedenkstätte Dachau) is fairly simple on public transportation from Munich Airport. At least two transfers are required with a total travel time 50 to 80 minutes.
Use a Munich M-5 day ticket to cover all transportation needs for this trip. (The Munich M-5 is often sold as the Airport Day Ticket.)
Several transportation options are available from Munich Airport to KZ-Gedenkstätte Dachau, but generally using one of the two routes described below is the simplest. Traveling via Oberschließheim is the fastest (50 minutes), but on weekends, traveling via Laim (80 minutes) may be needed due to fewer bus services.
On the return to Munich Airport, note that the S-Bahn train S1 often splits en route to the airport. Use the part of the S1 train marked Airport / Flughafen, not Freising. The station for passengers flying from Munich Airport is München Flughafen Terminal (not Flughafen Besucherpark!)

Best Transportation Options from Munich Airport to Dachau Concentration Camp:
Fastest: S-Bahn S1 & Buses X201 (or 291) & 726 via Oberschleißheim:
The fastest public transportation option from Munich Airport to Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial (KZ-Gedenkstätte Dachau) is via Oberschleißheim and takes around 50 minutes.
(Although the directions look complicated, the connections are straightforward.)
From Munich Airport (MUC Flughafen Terminal): use S-Bahn train S1 (direction München Ostbahnhof) to Oberschleißheim (20 min / 5 stops).
At Oberschleißheim station: change to bus X201 or 291 (whichever departing first) in the direction of Dachau Bahnhof. After about 12 minutes, exit bus 291 at Saubachsiedlung, Dachau, or bus X201 at Kopernikusstraße Abzw., Dachau. (If on bus X201, continue walking in the direction of travel and turn right at the traffic circle to reach the next bus stop.)
At Saubachsiedlung, Dachau: change to bus 726 (direction Dachau Bahnhof) and get off at KZ-Gedenkstätte (5 min / 3 stops).
On the return, bus numbers and stops stay the same, but the travel destinations are, of course, reversed. Take bus 726 in the direction of Gewerbegebiet Ost bis Saubachsiedling, bus 291 towards Unterschleißheim (but get off at Oberschleißheim!), and bus X201 to Oberschleißheim. To reach the stop Kopernikusstraße Abzw., Dachau for bus X201, continue walking in the direction of travel and cross the main road at the traffic circle.
If you have a long wait for the next bus, a bakery-café with long opening hours is located at the traffic circle near both bus stops.
S-Bahn Trains S1 & S2 & Bus 726 – a simple option that works every day:
The two train and one bus option works at any time on any day but takes around 80 minutes.
From Munich Airport (MUC): take S-Bahn train S1 (direction München Ostbahnhof) to München-Laim (35 min).
At München-Laim: change to S2 for Dachau (or direction Petershausen) and get off at Dachau station (15 min).
From Dachau Bahnhof: use bus 726 as described above (less than 10 min).
The total travel time is around 80 minutes. This routing is a simple option and is available every day.
This is the best option when not familiar with the Munich bus system. It won’t leave you stranded at an exposed bus stop if connections are missed. To force this route in the Deutsche Bahn timetable, add München-Laim as an intermediate stopover of a duration of 00:01.
Driving to Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial
Driving to Dachau is fairly simple with Autobahnen A8, A9, and A92 passing close to the town. The memorial site is in the eastern parts of Dachau – follow signs to Dachau Ost or KZ-Gedenkstätte. Paid parking is available off Pater-Roth-Straße and Alte Römerstraße near the information center.
Guided Tours from Munich to Dachau
Several companies offer guided tours to Dachau Concentration Camp from Munich. These tours often use public transportation, allowing participants to return at a later time if desired.
Official memorial tours are offered several times per day, while audio guides are available in several languages from the Visitors Center. All signs and comprehensive information boards, with very few exceptions, are in both German and English.
