Flying to Koblenz is easy with fast public transportation (trains or buses) from Frankfurt, Hahn, Cologne-Bonn and Düsseldorf airports.

Koblenz on the Rhine and Mosel Rivers in Germany can easily be reached by car or public transportation from several airports including Frankfurt International (FRA), Frankfurt-Hahn (HHN), Cologne-Bonn (CGN) and Düsseldorf (DUS). While Frankfurt International and Düsseldorf are major intercontinental hubs for Lufthansa, cheaper flights on low-cost airlines are often available to Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (Ryanair) or Köln-Bonn Airport (Germanwings, Easyjet, Air Berlin).

When using trains to Koblenz, note that the Regional Express trains often stop at both Koblenz-Hauptbahnhof (main station) and Koblenz-Stadtmitte (town center). Stadtmitte is a bit closer to the old town, Deutsches Eck and Rhine River cruise departure landings. Long-distance trains stop only at the Hauptbahnhof (Hbf).

Suntransfers gives online quotations for private airport transfers without first requiring personal details or flight numbers.

Flying to Koblenz via Frankfurt Airport (FRA)

Frankfurt International Airport (sometimes referred to a Frankfurt-Rhein-Main Flughafen) is the most convenient airport for most intercontinental travelers en route to Koblenz. Frankfurt is Germany’s largest airport with flights arriving from around 200 destinations worldwide.

Direct trains from Frankfurt Airport to Koblenz Hauptbahnhof take around 1.15 (ICE or IC) or 1:30 (RE). It is a beautiful ride as the trains run mostly directly next to the Rhine River.

These trains operate usually at least twice per hour (but there are gaps in the schedule. Further train connections requiring a transfer (usually in Mainz) are usually not slower but do avoid the milk trains that stop every few minutes. Slower trains are a bit cheaper but the difference is marginal on this route.

Check train schedules and buy tickets online from German Railways.

Driving from Frankfurt Airport to Koblenz can be as fast as an hour for the 110 km journey mostly along the Autobahn A3. The more beautiful route through the Rhine Valley is around 130 km with driving time at least two hours. The route on the right bank (via Rüdesheim) is easier to find from the airport. There are no bridges over the Rhine between Mainz-Wiesbaden and Koblenz but several car ferries provide crossings.

Flying to Koblenz via Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN)

Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN), hugely popular with low-cost airlines such as Ryanair, is even closer to Koblenz. The 70 km drive from Hahn Airport to Koblenz takes around an hour but more beautiful routes are along the Mosel or continue all the way to the Rhine before turning north.

See By Bus from Frankfurt-Hahn Airport to Koblenz and Cologne for public transportation options. If these bus times are not convenient, a further option is to take the bus to Mainz and the train from there back to Koblenz.

Flying to Koblenz via Cologne-Bonn Airport (CGN)

Köln-Bonn Flughafen (CGN) is a further airport conveniently close to Koblenz. This modern airport is just to the south of Cologne and popular with many low-cost airlines including Germanwings, Easyjet and Air Berlin.

Train and train-bus combinations from the airport to Koblenz take around 1:30 irrespective of the routing or place of transfer. The ICE and IC train combinations can be around €10 more expensive than RE trains on this routing.

The most convenient option is the hourly direct Regional Express trains from Cologne-Bonn Airport to Koblenz. However, many further options requiring a transfer in Köln or Bonn are also available and not slower overall.

See the German Railways website for schedules.

Driving from Cologne-Bonn Airport to Koblenz takes around an hour for the 93 km distance. The slower route along the Rhine is more interesting.

Flying to Koblenz via Düsseldorf Airport (DUS)

Düsseldorf Airport is a further option when flying to Koblenz but very much a second choice when compared to Frankfurt Airport. Direct trains from Düsseldorf Airport to Koblenz take 1:40 (IC) to just less than two hours (RE). The Deutsche Bahn website has all relevant options.

The driving distance from Düsseldorf Airport to Koblenz is 155 km and takes just less than two hours but expect heavy traffic on the route near Cologne.
