Tickets only for the Passion Play (Passionsspiele) 2010 in Oberammergau in Bavaria, Germany and hotel package deals for individual travelers are now sold via DER Reisebüro.

Buying tickets for the Passion Play (Passionsspiele) 2010 in Oberammergau in Germany is surprisingly complicated. The easiest way to see the Oberammergau Passion Play in 2010 is to book a tour of Germany or Europe that include the Passionsspiele in its itinerary. However, group tours are not for everyone and individuals can also buy Passion Play tickets in combination with hotel reservations through DER Reisebüro in Oberammergau. It is also possible to buy tickets for the Passion Play performance only and make own hotel and transport arrangements but the number of tickets are limited and the Passion Play ticket reservation process somewhat complicated.

Performance-only tickets for the 2010 Oberammergau Passion Play have sold out for the time being – to be placed on the waiting list, continue to follow the procedure set out below as if buying tickets. Tickets are still available in package deals with hotel accommodation or as part of a larger tour.

Buying Performance-Only Tickets for the Oberammergau Passion Play 2010, Germany

The Passion Play (Passionsspiele) will be performed 102 times in Oberammergau between May 15 and October 3, 2010. In a break from tradition, the Passion Play will be performed during the afternoon and evening, basically forcing spectators to dine in Oberammergau (or bring own food with). The first half is performed from 2:30 to 5 pm and the second half from 8 to 10:30 pm.

Advance reservations for performance-only tickets are only possible for Saturday performances as well as for October 1 and 3. If tickets are still available, they will be sold on the day of the performance but do note that most performances sold out in 2000.

Ticket prices for the 2010 Oberammergau Passion Play range from €45 to €150 depending on the seating. Add 10% for advance reservations.

Tickets for individuals for the Passion Play performance only, will be on sale from April 20, 2009. To buy tickets, it is necessary to obtain the necessary reservation forms from the Oberammergau DER Reisebüro. These forms must be mailed or faxed back and tickets are awarded on a first-come first-serve basis.

This non-automated ticket system is of limited use to international travelers with limited flexibility in their travel schedules. It is mostly aimed at locals who can easily get to – and most importantly back from – the performance on weekends.

Hotels in the Oberammergau region will not be cheap during the months that the Passion Play are performed and generally will only take reservations through the DER Reisebüro for the period. If planning to stay over in the region, it may well be better to buy from the start one of the package deals for individuals that include hotel accommodation and meals as well as transportation to and from the theater.

Performance and Hotel Package Deals for Individual Travelers to the Passion Play 2010

Individuals can buy package deals that include the Passion Play performance and hotel stays in Oberammergau for any performance from the DER Reisebüro. Once again, it is a non-automated process and forms need to be mailed or faxed.

These package deals (or arrangements as the DER Reisebüro in Oberammergau prefers to call them) include one or two night’s accommodation, lunch and dinner on the day of the Passion Play performance, admission tickets to the performance, an official program, admission to the Oberammergau Museum as well as transportation to and from the Passionstheater on the day of the performance.

Prices for these packages range from €200 to €600 and depend on the category of accommodation selected ranging from luxury hotels to rooms in private houses in Oberammergau and the direct vicinity. The seating in the theater is linked to the class of accommodation selected.

Package deals and performance-only tickets for individuals to attend the 2010 Passion Play are already on sale.

The Passion Play is performed in the Passionstheater in Oberammergau town. The Passion Theater can seat around 4,500. Although the theater is partly in the open air, all seats are under roof cover and performances are not cancelled due to bad rain.

Oberammergau is in a beautiful part of Bavaria with many different things to do in addition to seeing the Passion Play. Further religious sights include nearby Ettal Monastery and the Wieskirche – a defining work of the Bavaria Rococo and inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list. In addition to the beautiful nature of the Bavarian Alps, visitors can also tour two fantasy palaces of Bavarian Mad King Ludwig – his Disney-like Schloss Neuschwanstein Castle and the small but actually completed Schloss Linderhof Palace. Transportation to Oberammergau is usually easy but due to the Passion Play performances ending late at night, not a viable option for after theater travel.
